Quince the cat decides to go out on an adventure in search for a rare treasure! Can Quince overcome all of the obstacles on the journey? Fight your way through 5 action-packed levels! Use your magnificent seed-planting techniques to eradicate the high mountains that block your way! Show 'em who's boss, Quince!

Awesome! If you'd rather listen to it on your mp3 player, there is a free soundtrack you can download: store.flashygoodness.com/album…

The fact that you called this "First Blossom" implies that there's a possibility of a "full version" being created someday. If that happens, I would pay money for it. You and your friends made something really cute and fun here! Not to mention kind of imaginative too! The music is beautiful, the fact that you never kill anything is a wonderful touch, and the experiance is very pleasent all around.

Seriously, make a full version for Steam and you'd get my money for sure! Great work! =D

I was intending to only play for a little bit to try it but got hooked! Amazing work. Reminded me a lot of the good old says playing Kirby's Dreamland on my GB. Simple but very versitile mechanics. A great use of less is more allowing you to really explore all the ways just the jumping and plants could be used to get around. Thanks for a fun time!

I very much did! Let me give special thanks to the level designer too, I bet it was tough to get all those twists and turns on the vines to work out. :)

Replies from our level designers:

Pongball: "Thanks! It took lots of thought and some trial and error, but the process was a lot of fun."

~potatotan: "Thanks for the comment! White mouse/koala traps were very fun to make."

I have to add that these levels were designed before the vine mechanic was even implemented in the game engine. The vines were actually programmed during the final hours of development, so they really did an amazing job making everything work without the luxury of testing.

Really nice game :D

It's interesting that it follows the GB restrictions so closely.
Can't see many things that couldn't actually be pulled off on the real system in this and that makes the technically restricted dork in me really happy :>

Thank you, I'm glad you noticed! The biggest thing we did that probably couldn't be done on the actual system is loading so many graphics in a single area. The Game Boy is extremely limited in how many unique tiles it can hold in memory at once, and we went quite a bit over that limit! However, I think it was well worth it. :>

Hmm, didn't really catch any obvious tile limit breaches anywhere.
Any clue on where exactly you went over the limit? :)

The Game Boy displays all sprites and background graphics using tiles sized at 8x8 pixels, and it can load up to 384 unique tiles for a single area. Plant Cat loads at least double that amount in every level (mostly due to sprites having many animation frames), so it wouldn't fit within the Game Boy's video memory. We'd either have to split each level into multiple rooms or trim the sprite animations / background tiles a lot if we ever ported this game to the actual system.

Well one COULD load the tile animations in as they need to appear.

As in you have let's say a little patch of grass that's 16x 8 and needs to be animated.
Then you just load a new tile from ROM into that tile slot instead of having to change the tile pointer in the tile map.

This would however not be very beneficial speed wise for segments where there is a lot of animation going on at the same time. :B

I've already accounted for the method you described, and it still doesn't fit. The Game Boy Color, on the other hand, has twice as much room for tiles...

Interesting.

Wouldn't have guessed it used that many tiles :o

Anywho, it's a AMAZING game and would've loved seeing something like this back in the day :)
Really feels polished and don't think I've seen a similar platforming mechanic before.
(reminds me both of the vines in SMB and the stretchy mechanic in James Pond though :D )

I've been working on making assets for a game I want to make and been looking on here for other people that work in Flash to get some inspiration. This is one of the first pieces that actually does that, lol. Np.

I'm stuck in a hole with the first mouse, but I don't know what to do ;-; I tried doing the plant thing on it, and it gets caught in leaves I guess, and I tried using it to jump out of the hole, but that's not how it works apparently...
